Bifold doors have lots of benefits, and with some simple maintenance tricks, you can ensure their performance remains as good as ever. Aluminium bifold doors are designed to be incredibly low maintenance, but it’s still important to regularly look for signs of damage.
Want to look after your bifolds? Here’s what you need to do.
How do you clean bifold door glass?
If you have bifolds in a family home, the glass is likely to pick up smears from tiny handprints and paws. Over time, window and door glazing can also suffer from a build-up of airborne debris that can dull their look, so they need a proper clean. Luckily, it’s very easy to restore shine to aluminium bifold doors.
Usually, some warm water and a wipe down is enough, but you can also get special cleaning products as long as you check they’re compatible with the material. It’s important not to use any harsh products or abrasive cleaning tools.
Should you clean bifold door frames?
Cleaning bifold door frames is much like caring for the glass, working gently to sweep any liquid downwards. Again, it’s better to avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning methods like cream cleaners and scratchy sponges. Even though aluminium is very tough, you should use a soft cloth to protect its powder coating.
If there are any stubborn marks, ‘magic’ foam erasers are great if you gently rub the affected areas to remove the grime, being careful not to grind any harsh substances into the glazing.
How do you prevent sticky bifolds?
Bifolds sit in a frame to support the glass panels. The opening mechanism is usually completely smooth and lightweight. However, tiny specks of grit and debris can get stuck in the runners, preventing the doors from running freely when they’re stacked to one or both sides of the opening.
One way to maintain your bifold performance and avoid sticky doors is to use your vacuum hose to remove any grit or dirt stuck around the frame. This should stop difficulties with opening and closing the bifolds and protect the mechanism from damage. You could also wipe a damp cloth over the hinges and rollers to remove debris.
Do bifolds stay secure?
Like any door installation, security is paramount. The best way to maintain bifold door security is by keeping an eye on how they are opening and closing. The doors should fold back easily and shouldn’t catch.
Also watch out for wear and tear around the lock and that the handle doesn’t feel loose. Keys should turn in the lock easily, and you could spray some WD40 if you think it needs some.
