Bifolds are one of the most customisable door designs, with everything from their frame colours to the number of door leaves fully adaptable to your needs. Whether you’re choosing bifold doors for a kitchen extension, conservatory, dining area or pool room, there are various size options for both small and large spaces.

However, when it comes to getting the size of your bifold doors right, you may have lots of questions. Is there enough wall space for my bifolds? Will the existing opening need widening? How many door leaves can you install?

To help you understand your options, here’s our guide to the maximum and minimum sizes for bifolds.

What’s the maximum size for bifolds?

When looking at the maximum height of bifolds, it’s best to start with individual door leaves. The maximum height for an Origin bifold door panel is just over 3 metres, depending on the configuration you choose. The maximum width of a single bifold leaf is around 1.2 metres.

When you measure your opening space, think about how the panels are going to fold when they’re opened. If you want the widest door leaves, you’ll need more internal floor space to fit inward-opening doors.

You can have bifolds with only two panes, but most people prefer three panes and above.

What’s the smallest bifold door you can get?

The minimum width for an Origin bifold door pane is approximately is 400mm. While you may find another manufacturer offers a narrower door than that, please ask your supplier about how this affects the quality, as it can be hard to operate the doors if they are too small.

Your bifold door supplier should also conduct a survey and let you know the maximum and minimum heights to consider. They’ll be taking into account everything from the track requirements to frame sizes. You could also opt for expansive corner bifolds across two adjoining walls of your extension.
